The History of Medicine and Healing in the Black Community. Beginning at Home
February 4-April 1, 2002
Candi Farlice and Ann Schnake created the main installation, which recreated a room for healing, with a bed, soup, castor oil, poultices, and music. Many of the elements appear magically suspended, recreating some of the mystery and wonder of healing. The exhibit drew on African American healing traditions, including root workers, faith healers, prayer vigils, home cooking, plants and herbs, and home remedies. Artwork by local children's art programs accompanied the exhibition and the opening reception included gospel music, progressive hip-hop and story telling.
